Lancasters Solicitors (Chiswick, by kehollis)

Do not use this solicitor, he takes your money and then never completes the work - I used him for a simple charge on my property and after more than one year the work was never completed, when I complained about his service he gave me abuse and refused to return any of my money, he then asked for even more money to complete the job! Steer clear..

Franco Manca (Chiswick, by thelondonfoodie)

Franco Manca in Chiswick - Pics at The London Foodie
(http://www.thelondonfoodie.co.uk)

Dr G and I recently went to the newly opened branch of Franco Manca in Chiswick with fellow food blogger Su-Lin of Tamarind & Thyme.

Unlike the Brixton joint, the Chiswick branch is a real restaurant – it feels modern and casual with a massive mosaic-tiled, wood-burning oven dominating its entrance. I liked the simplicity and understated elegance of the décor, the long communal tables, and the uncluttered and airy space.

Much has been said about Franco Manca, its slow-rising sourdough pizza base (minimum 20 hours), and the organic Italian or locally sourced ingredients (see Su-Lin’s great review on Tamarind & Thyme). I was however still impressed to find how delicious their pizza dough was – this was for me the main event regarding Franco Manca.

The dough was elastic with a deliciously chewy, dense consistency like good quality sourdough bread. The crust had been beautifully charred giving a woody, smoky flavour to the dough.

Also impressive was how affordable Franco Manca’s pizzas were, priced between £4.50 and£6.90. This is much better value than similar Neapolitan style pizzerias like Rossopomodoro or Pizza East.

We shared three of the starters “Aubergine alla Parmegiana”, “Garlic Pizza Bread” and “Fresh Buffalo Mozzarella”. The aubergine was beautifully made, and so was the rather large garlic sourdough bread.

The buffalo mozzarella was, in my opinion, not as sensational as the one I tried at Rossopomodoro, and the addition of tomato sauce to the mozzarella overpowered its delicate flavour.

As for the pizza, Su-Lin and I went for “Meat Special” @ £6.90 (wild mushrooms, wild boar, smoked buffalo mozzarella). This was very good, with a generous topping of mozzarella and mushrooms. The wild boar salami was also a nice addition. The pizza base was sensational, and the fact that it was a white pizza (with no tomato sauce) did not detract from the overall experience.

Dr G went for a “Number 5” @ £6.80 (tomato, cured organic chorizo (dry and semi Dry), mozzarella). The tomato sauce tasted fresh and had probably been made on the premises. It was again a delicious pizza with authentic ingredients.

We shared a bottle of organic Dolcetto £9.20, this was a simple and rustic wine and although well priced, it was disappointingly of not very good quality. Su-Lin had a 250ml bottle of organic lemonade £1.80, and we both wished we had ordered the same.

Cost: around £45 (£15 per person) including a bottle of wine & service.

Likes: sensational sourdough base, good quality & authentic ingredients, very affordable prices, and free filtered water.

Dislikes: limited wine choices (only one red and one white option).

Verdict: One of the best pizzerias in London, serving excellent sourdough pizza base at very affordable prices. It may lack the glamour of Pizza East or Rossopomodoro’s central location but their pizzas are second to none and will set you back significantly less. Highly recommended.

*Update* - Since writing this post, I heard from Giuseppe M. of Franco Manca, this is what he wrote:

Many thanks for you kind comments. Since your visit we have changed the house wine (which was there only temporarely) and have replaced with an organic wine. This makes possibly the best value for money in London. The wine list also includes 5 reds and 3 whites now. We work with an organic farm in Italy and this is the new outcome.

I sometimes hear from restaurants I review but I'd never had such positive response, thanks Giuseppe! The London Foodie on 2nd March 2010.

Franco Manca (Chiswick, by tikichris)

West London pizza lovers rejoice! No longer simply a South London institution, Brixton's foodie favoured pizzeria - Franco Manca - has opened a second branch in villagey Chiswick. And if my experience at their launch party is at all representative of what diners can expect, W4 residents and those inclined to travel a bit for quality nosh are in for a treat!
The secret to Franco Manca's success is its wood burning oven-baked, low rising sourdough crust. Chiswick and FM's original pizzeria in Brixton are a bit far afield for me, but I'm up for the journey. It's definitely worth it!

Perfectly Happy People (Chiswick, by arwhine)

I ordered the universal car seat protector from The Baby Catalogue / Perfectly Happy People, which far from being universal doesn't fit either my Maxi cosi or Britax car seat. The side straps holes are at the back of the seat and not at the sides as all car seats are now designed. The PH people refused to accept that the item was not fit for purpose and whilst I get a refund it has cost me £7 in postage to not have a car seat cover. On top of thatwoman I spoke to was very rude to me on the phone and told me to address any letter of complaint to her. Not perfectly happy.

The shop has a really great range of gifts and jewellery and I love the friendly atmosphere and the local boutique feel! A lot of the jewellery is hand made, which is fab for finding some one off pieces, and they're really reasonably priced. This is my favourite shop :]

My Plumber Limited (Chiswick, by atillett)

I needed to make arrangements from the Scottish Highlands for work to be done in my daughter's flat in Brentford when I would be there briefly in her absence. From my first telephone conversation with MY PLUMBER I felt I was in good hands and all subsequent contact has unreservedly confirmed my initial reaction. Their tradesman turned up on time and did a thorough job in a very pleasant manner at a competitive price. Joy of joys, I have now discovered that the company does more than just plumbing. Why look anywhere else??!!

Charlotte's Bistro (Chiswick, by Nikki Morton)

We went on a Saturday lunchtime for the soft opening, and it was really, really good. A bit slow, but we were warned to expect this with a new staff.

The food was lovely, with decent sized portions, and lovely flavours. A £1 cover charge per person covers unlimited sparking and still water for the table, plus bread when you sit down. A good choice on the menu, with a good amount of vegetarian options, and a decent wine list, with a very good white for £16 a bottle. All wines come in half bottle carafes as well, fairly priced at half the cost of the full bottle.

Apart from a snotty comment when I requested ice cream with my dessert instead of creme anglaise, the service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is relaxed and the decoration is stylish without being too over the top.

We spent New Years Eve at Pissarro as a party of 6. The atmosphere was lovely, there was live music and a very happy buzz. The service was outstanding and the 5 course menu was superb, well designed, well balanced, well cooked and served hot and fresh. To be recommended -if you can find it!

I really like it. They deliver for orders over £10, and even have a system which recognises the number you're calling from and they confirm your address from their records. Especially good hot and sour soup, and bean curd special. Slightly on the pricey side; I just ordered egg fried rice and the beef with black bean sauce and a bean curd special and the cost is £12.90 delivered to my door...where I will shuffle down in my slippers and dressing gown to receive it in 20 mins.

Stripped wood kind of "pub with dining".

Didn't try the food. Beer expensive but ok. Staff very polite (Perhaps to justify the prices)

Distinctly unmemorable- I'll leave my "gut" star rating but I am now thinking it's generous.

Clean pleasant pub/restaurant. A little pricey. service was good, but my onion soup starter was nondescript. Similarly the moules marinieres proved to be ok but the sauce/ stock was bland though over salted.

12% service was added to our bill without any request (and doesn't seem to be voluntary). OK but I will not rush back.....

Oxfam Bookshop (Chiswick, by joart)

An excellent bookshop. Well-displayed stock ranging from paperbacks to nearly-new art books, realistically priced. The staff, mostly volunteers, are welcoming and efficient. As well as books etc there are goats - well, tokens for them, for the benefit of poor families in the developing world - an excellent gift for those children whom one is trying to wean off the expectation of presents for Christmas and/or Birthday.
Highly recommended shop.

The Hole In The Wall (Chiswick, by andavids)

Dropped in for a bite to eat and a pint last night with my mate Tim, been meaning to go there for some time as everyone says how nice it is. Wasn't disappointed, really welcoming atmosphere on a cold and damp January evening. Only two bitters, but good ones - Pride and Spitfire. Food wasn't cheap, £10.50 for the Tabbouleh, and £13.50 for the Rib-Eye, but both were excellent. Fairly busy but staff were really friendly, attentive and chatty. Will definitely be going again, take the kids at the weekend.
